PREVIEW

Switzerland vs Algeria Preview: Swiss Aim to End Desert Warriors' Historic World Cup Journey

Switzerland will look to continue their impressive FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign when they take on Algeria in the Round of 16 at BC Place in Vancouver on Friday.

The Swiss booked their place in the knockout rounds after finishing top of Group B with seven points from three matches. Algeria, meanwhile, progressed as the third-placed team in Group J after collecting four points, edging through despite ending the group stage with a goal difference of -2.

Match Preview

Switzerland have been one of the tournament's most consistent teams so far. Murat Yakin's side secured first place in their group thanks to a memorable 2-1 victory over co-hosts Canada, controlling much of the contest despite surviving late pressure during stoppage time.

The Swiss finished the group stage with seven goals scored and only three conceded, a significant improvement on their World Cup 2022 campaign, where they managed just four goals while allowing three.

Victory on Friday would see Switzerland reach the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time in the modern era, while extending their remarkable run of reaching the knockout stages in four consecutive World Cups.

Awaiting the winner in the quarter-finals will be either Colombia or Ghana. Neither opponent should be underestimated, but Switzerland will view this section of the bracket as a genuine opportunity to make history before potentially meeting one of FIFA's highest-ranked nations.

Switzerland also arrive in excellent form. They are unbeaten in their last nine competitive matches, winning six during that stretch. Their only defeat in their previous 10 competitive fixtures came against Spain in the UEFA Nations League back in November 2024.

Defensively, the Swiss have been equally impressive, conceding more than one goal in only one of their last 14 matches across all competitions. Their experience and defensive stability make them one of the more difficult teams to eliminate in tournament football.

Algeria Chasing Another Historic Milestone

Algeria secured a dramatic place in the knockout rounds after a thrilling 3-3 draw with Austria in their final group-stage match. The result was enough to send both teams through, with qualification confirmed after an entertaining six-goal encounter.

The fixture inevitably reminded many supporters of the infamous 1982 World Cup "Disgrace of Gijón," when Algeria were controversially eliminated following West Germany's 1-0 victory over Austria.

This year's qualification marks only the second time Algeria have reached the World Cup Round of 16. Their previous appearance came in 2014, when they pushed eventual champions Germany to extra time before suffering a narrow 2-1 defeat.

Head coach Vladimir Petkovic has guided his side to solid recent form, losing only once in his last seven matches—a 3-0 defeat to Argentina. During that period, Algeria have claimed four victories and continued to show resilience against quality opposition.

History, however, favours Switzerland. The two nations have met only twice previously, both in friendly matches, with Switzerland winning 2-1 in 1983 and 2-0 in 1986.

Team News

Switzerland have only one notable fitness concern. Full-back Silvan Widmer missed training because of a hip issue, although he has not yet been ruled out of the match.

Should Widmer be unavailable, Luca Jaquez is expected to continue at right-back after an encouraging display against Canada. Nico Elvedi and Manuel Akanji should once again form the heart of the defence, while captain Granit Xhaka is guaranteed to start in midfield. Johan Manzambi could retain his attacking midfield role behind striker Breel Embolo.

Algeria may have to cope without forward Mohamed El Amine Amoura, who remains doubtful because of injury. If he is unavailable, Riyad Mahrez, Ibrahim Maza, Fares Chaibi and Amine Gouiri are expected to lead the attack.

Nabil Bentaleb is likely to anchor the midfield, providing protection for experienced central defenders Aïssa Mandi and Ramy Bensebaini.

Predicted Starting Lineups

Switzerland: Kobel; Jaquez, Elvedi, Akanji, Rodriguez; Freuler, Xhaka; Sow, Manzambi, Vargas; Embolo.

Algeria: Zidane; Belghali, Mandi, Bensebaini, Ait-Nouri; Boudaoui, Bentaleb; Mahrez, Maza, Chaibi; Gouiri.
